Thomas Jefferson Commissions Meriwether Lewis and William Clark

In early 1803, US President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who were both experienced American soldiers, to explore what is now called the northwestern United States. Jefferson requested detailed observations concerning transcontinental routes and natural resources. The President also instructed the expeditionary leaders to make contact with Indian tribes within related areas. New urgency surfaced suddenly because of the Louisiana Purchase, as very little was known about the expansive addition of land west of the Mississippi River, and territorial boundaries had to be established soon. Sacajawea, a woman of the Shoshone Indian tribe, joined the expedition and served as a translator and guide.
